M1U1 reading material 1Introduction to School Life in the UKEducation is an important part of British life. There are hundreds of schools, colleges and universities, including some of the most famous in the world.Education is free and compulsory (义务的) for all children between the ages of 5 - 16. Some children are educated at home rather than in school.Children's education in England is normally divided into two separate stages. They begin with primary education at the age of five and this usually lasts until they are eleven. Then they move to secondary school, there they stay until they reach sixteen, seventeen or eighteen years of age.M1U1 reading material 2School Life for a 13 year old British Boy My School is a mixed 11-18 school. There about 1,150 students in my school, including 200 in the sixth form. It is called a Technology College and specializes (专门,以为特长) in Computers and Maths. My school has over 1200 computers (including over 400 tablet PC's). I am in Year 8 and at the end of Key Stage 3 (a year earlier than normal). I am presently having to decide what GCSEs(中级普通教育证书)I would like to start working towards. I sit my GCSE exams next year. Some subjects are compulsory like Maths, English, Science and a foreign language. I am not sure what other GSCEs I will be taking. I will have to decide soon. 1 / 64-5Primary School or Infant School Reception- Primary 1 (P1) 5-6"KS1Year 1Primary 2 (P2)Primary 1 (P1)6-7""Year 2Primary 3 (P3)Primary 2 (P2)7-8Primary School or Junior SchoolKS2Year 3Primary 4 (P4)Primary 3 (P3)8-9""Year 4Primary 5 (P5)Primary 4 (P4)9-10""Year 5Primary 6 (P6)Primary 5 (P5)10-11""Year 6Primary 7 (P7)Primary 6 (P6)11-12Secondary SchoolKS3Year 7Secondary 1 Primary 7 (P7)12-13""Year 8Secondary 2 Secondary 1 13-14""Year 9Secondary 3 Secondary 2 14-15"KS4Year 10 Secondary 3 15-16" " Year 11Secondary 4S4 Std Grade 16-176th Form at Secondary School or CollegeA' Level(类似于国内高考)Year 12Secondary 5S5 HigherSecondary 4S4 Std Grade17-18" " Year 13Secondary 6S6 Adv HigherSecondary 5S5 Higher     Secondary 6S6 Adv HigherWhat Grade / Year Group would I be in Britain?(Children are put into year groups (grades). The bus is a special one just for kids going to my school. The journey on the bus takes an hour because it has to keep stopping to pick up other students along the way. When I arrive at school, I collect my Tablet PC from the Flexi (Flexiable Learning Centre). Then I go to my Tutor Room for Registration(登记,签到) at 8:30.We listen to announcements to see what special things are happening at school today or this week. At about 8:50 we leave Tutor Room to go to our First Period. Every day I have a different Lesson the first period. Normally it is Humanities but I also have Maths, Drama and Music, and French on the other days. Each period lasts an hour. All my lessons are in different rooms and places around the school. Each Room either has a three digit(数字) number or a name. The numbers are very hard to remember! I have different teachers for each lesson. I have a locker where I can store some of my stuff but otherwise I have to carry it all around with my in my bags. The teacher reads out each childs name in turn(轮流,按顺序). On hearing his/her name, the child replies 'yes Mrs. (teacher's name)' and the teacher notes down in the book whether the child is in school or not.Swipe Cards(刷卡)Every Student carries a swipe card. We swipe into every lesson to let the school know that we have attended that certain lesson and to know where we are in case of emergencies(紧急情况). On the Swipe Card there are two stripes, a black and a brown. The brown is to swipe into lessons and the black is to get into the toilets and buildings. SubjectsMaths,EnglishScienceICTDramaMusicArtPEHumanities (History, Geography, and Religion)French or SpanishCanteen(食堂,餐厅) The Canteen is open at Lunch Time and Break Time. Most hot food is served only at lunch time. Chips are only available on Mondays and Fridays. Tablet PC We don't use our Tablet PCs in all lessons because some rooms do not have enough power sockets. We use the Tablets to do our work on and to surf the Internet. Our Tablet PCs are connected to a Network so we can send our work straight to our teachers and they can send them back with their comments. AssemblyIn the morning, the children go to assembly in our main hall(大厅). They sit on the floor in rows with the youngest children at the front and the older children at the back. As the children enter the hall they listen quietly to the music playing. Each week has a different musical theme and the children are asked to listen out for particular things.M1U1 reading material 5What does a British school look like? The school was built in the 1960's to replace an overcrowding school in our local town centre. The main building of our school is two storey with four classes on each floor. We also have classes in outer buildings. You can see the hall and office block at the school entrance.Classrooms Our classrooms are large and every classroom, in the main teaching block, has its own resource area. In all classrooms there is a computer, overhead projector, an interactive whiteboard and flip chart. Each class is well resourced for all curriculum areas. Music Room We have a well equipped music room where class and individual lessons are held. Many of our students play a variety of musical instruments. Opportunity Centre We have an Opportunity Centre for individual and small group work with learning support assistances. Library This is our reference library. It is used by all the classes weekly and also at lunch times. Every classroom has its own mini libraries too.Computers We have a computer suite of 32 computers as well as computers in every classroom. School Hall We have an amazing school hall. The hall is used for gymnastics, assemblies, eating lunch and is the place where we hold our many eventsQuiet Area This is our quiet area, for children who want peace away from our two playgrounds at break times. It used to be a place where the school rabbits were kept when the school first opened. (Pets - new window will open)Nature Area We have many nature areas around the school. This one, outside our main block, contains our school pond which is looked after by our Environmental Club members. We also have a 'wild area' in the corner of our playing field.M1U1 reading material 6How to Start a Club in SchoolBy School clubs are a great way to make a large school seem smaller. I have spent 10 years teaching at an elementary school with over 900 students and we have lots of clubs. They are a great way for students with similar interests to meet. I've even started clubs myself such as a roller hockey club, a technology club and a Dad's Club. I also attended UCLA which is one of the largest student bodies(身体,团体) in the country. The clubs at UCLA were a great way to find students with similar interests who you would not have found otherwise. If you find that your school doesn't offer any extracurricular activities that interest you, then, start your own club. It's really not that hard and could have a tremendous payoff. With a little bit of effort, you can create fun advertisements for the club and draw in members. Perhaps plan a date to meet with your fellow officers to make posters and flyers. Hang posters in classrooms, eating areas or other common places around campus and make sure to pass out stacks of flyers before or after your classes. If your school has a newspaper or an e-mail announcement list for students, try to get an article or advertisement. This is a good time to have a kick-off fundraiser or other event to get things rolling. High school can be a lot more fun when you're involved and starting a club is a great way to do just that. -温馨提示:如不慎侵犯了您的权益,可联系文库删除处理,感谢您的关注!
