定时训练(18) (阅读填空)The Chinese are very generous when it comes to educating their children. Some parents send their children to the best schools or even abroad to England, the US or Australia, regardless of how much this costs. Many also want their children to take extracurriculum activities where they either learn a musical instrument or ballet,or other classes that will give them a head start in life. The Chinese believe that the more expensive an education is,the better it is,so parents often spend unreasonable amount of money on education. Even poor couple buy a computer for their son or daughter. However, what most parents fail to see is that the best education they can give their children is usually very cheap. Parents can see that their children's skills vary;they will usually be skilled in some areas while poor in others. What most parents fail to realize though,is that today's children lack selfrespect and selfconfidence. The problem is that parents are only educating their children on how to take multiplechoice tests and how to study effectively. They are not teaching them the most important skills they need to be confident, happy and clever.Parents can help achieve this by teaching their children practical skills like cooking, sewing and other housework.Teaching a child to cook will improve many of the skills that he will need later in life. Cooking demands patience and time. It is an enjoyable but difficult experience. A good cook always tries to improve his cooking,so he will learn to work hard and gradually finish his job successfully. The result,a wellcooked dinner, will give a child a lot of satisfaction and confidence. An old machine such as a broken radio or TV set that you give your child may make him curious and arouse his interest. If he will spend hours looking at it,and try to mend it,your child might become an engineer when he grows up. Such activities do more than teach a child to read a book, but rather they teach them to think, and to use their minds. This is much more important than learning by reading a book.Title:How Chinese Parents Should _1_ Their Children._2_ practice of Chinese parents:being blindly generous with money when it comes to make decisions and choices and to act in agreement with them.It is the ability to act rather than to be acted upon,to actively carry out the program we have developed through the other three qualities. The human will is an amazing thing.Time after time,it has overcome unbelievable difficulties. The Helen Kellers of this world give dramatic(给人深刻印象的)evidence to the value, the power of the independent will. But as we examine this quality in the context of effective selfmanagement,we realize it's usually not the dramatic, the visible, the onceinalifetime, upbythebootstraps(自立自强的)effort that brings lasting success. This special ability comes from learning how to use this great quality in the decisions we make every day.The degree to which we have developed our independent will in our everyday lives is measured by our personal honesty.Honesty is,fundamentally, the value we place on ourselves. It's our ability to make and keep promises to ourselves,to “walk our talk”Effective management is putting first things first. While leadership decides what “first things”are,it is management that puts them first, daybyday, momentbymoment.Management is discipline(training to be selfcontrolled),carrying it out.Discipline obtains from beliefbelief in a set of values, belief in an overriding(最主要的)purpose,to a longterm or shortterm goal that must be carried out.In other words,if you are an effective manager of yourself, your discipline comes from within;it is a function of your independent will. You are a follower of your own deep values and their source. And you have the will, the quality to control your feelings and moods rather than depend on others or have your work half done.TitleThe power of independent willThemeIndependent will makes selfmanagement large family of dialects and written forms.Spoken Chinese is specially complex with more than five recognized dialect groups, even the written language with two recognized characters. The written forms of Chinese include a traditional system of characters and a simplified one.The simplified version of characters came into use in 1949.Traditional Chinese characters are still widely used throughout Asia and among Chinese people around the world, while the simplified characters are only found in the People's Republic of China. It is usually accepted that there are five major dialect groups within the Chinese language group. These are Mandarin,Wu,Min,Cantonese and Hakka.Mandarin is the official language on the Chinese mainland and Chinese Taiwan. It is also one of the four official languages of Singapore.Wu is spoken around the lower Yangtze River and its tributaies(支流)Shanghai is a wellknown dialect of Wu.Min is commonly spoken by people in Taiwan,Fujian and Hainan.Cantonese is mainly spoken in the province of Guangdong.Cantonese is also spoken in many parts of the Chinese Diaspora(移居地),particularly Hong Kong and overseas Chinese settlements in the United States,Europe and Southeast Asia.Hakka is the least wellknown dialect group inside China compared to the above four. Most of the Hakka dialect group is scattered(散居)throughout southeastern China in Guangxi Province.Historically, the Hakka people were northerners who moved south over several hundred years.Their name Hakka means “guest”indicating their immigrant(移民)status in the southern areas to which they moved.TitleChinese LanguageThemeChinese differs from many other languages in that it has many written forms and dialects. Two _1_ formsTraditional charactersStill in _2_ throughout Asia and among How about one that can read your mind?Well, that phone may well be on its way.Justin Rattner, chief researcher at Intel, says that technology has developed to the point that “contextaware computing(情景感知计算)”,an idea that's been around for twenty years,is becoming more of a reality. That could lead to a phone that acts as a mind reader in your pocket. But rather than simply collect secrets about you,the device could do things with that information, such as predict what you might do next and make suggestions.Rattner gave a few examples during his speech at Intel's developer conference in San Francisco recently.Among them is a software that Intel worked on with Fodor's Travel,a traveling website. It learns what types of foods you like to eat and what types of places you like to visit, based on searches you type into the phone or places you searched using GPS(全球定位系统)The software makes similar recommendations when you visit a new city.Tech companies are already working to predict what people want.Search engine Google, movierental service Netflix, and online radio service Pandora try to guess what people want even before they know they want it.Putting those types of functions together with the other information that phones collect about people could pave the way for even more helpful mobile phones,Rattner said.A challenge is training computers to look at data from “hard sensors(传感器)”(which measure place, movement, temperature and the like)and combining those findings with data from “soft sensors”(such as calendar appointments and Web browsing history)For example, your phone could tell that you have just left school and seem to be on your way homea location it might know from your address book.It could then tell you the best route around traffic.Rattner added that researchers are even making steps toward the final goala computer understanding of thoughts.Technology predicting_1_A software by Intel and _2_traveling recommendation serviceGoogle_3_Netflix_4_5_an online radio serviceTechnology collecting _6_Data from hard sensorsData from soft sensorsPlace_7_Temperature._8_Web browsing historyA smart phone_9_ in your pocketCollecting secrets about youPredicting what you might do_10_答案1.people's needs/what people want2.Fodor's Travel3.(a)search engine4.(a)movierental service5.Pandora6.personal information/information about people7.Movement8.Calendar appointments9.(a) mind reader10.Making suggestions
