The disease was pellagra(烟酸缺乏病). Doctor Goldberger traveled to the state of Mississippi where many people had pellagra. He studied the patients and their families. Most of the people were poor. The doctor came to believe that the disease was not passed from one person to another, but instead had something to do with food. He received agreement from state officials to test this idea at a prison(监狱). Prisoners were offered pardons if they took part. One group of prisoners received their usual food, mostly corn. A second group ate meat, fresh vegetables and milk. Members of the first group developed pellagra. The second group did not. But some experts refused to accept that poor food caused pellagra. They thought there were other causes. So Doctor Goldberger put blood(血液) from a person with pellagra into his own body. He even took pills that had blood from pellagra patients. An assistant also took part in the experiments. So did Doctor Goldbergers wife. None of them got sick. Later, the doctor discovered that a bit of dried brewers yeast(酿 酒的酵母) each day could prevent pellagra. Joseph Goldberger died of cancer in 1929. He was 55 years old. Several years later, researchers discovered the true cause of pellagra: having little of the vitamin B. 31. How old was Doctor Goldberger when he began to study pellagra? A. 22. B. 30. C. 38. For example, suppose a friend wants to borrow 5 some money from you. You say “I wish I could help you, but I am short of money myself.” In fact, you are not short of money but your friend is in the habit of not paying his debts and you dont want to hurt his feelings by reminding him of this. Is this really a lie? Professor Jerald Jellison of the University of southern California has made a scientific study of lying. According to him, women are better lies than men, particularly when telling a “white lie”, such as when a woman at a party tells another woman that she likes her dress when she really thinks its terrible. However, this is only one side of the story. Other researchers say that men are more likely to tell more serious lies, such as making a promise that they have no intention of carrying out. This is the kind of lie politicians(政治家) and businessmen are supposed to be particularly skilled at: the lie from which the liar hopes to profit or gain in some way. Research has been done into the way peoples behavior changes in a number of small, unimportant ways when they lie. It has been found that if they are sitting down at the time, they tend to move about in their chairs more than usual. To the trained observer they are saying “I wish I were somewhere else now”. They also tend to touch certain parts of the face, particularly the nose. One explanation of this may be that lying causes a slight increase in blood pressure. The tip of the nose is very sensitive to changes and the increased pressure makes it itch. Another gesture that gives liars away is what the writer Decmond Morris in his book Man Watching calls the “mouth cover”. He says that there are several typical forms of this, such as covering part of the mouth with the fingers, touch the upper lip or putting a finger of the hand at one side off the mouth. Such a gesture can be understood as an unconscious(未察觉的) attempt on the part of the liar to stop himself from lying. Of course, such gestures as rubbing the nose or covering the mouth, moving about in a chair can not be taken as proof that the speaker is lying. They simply tend to happen more often in this situation. It is one gesture alone that gives the liar away but a whole number of things, and in particular the context(上 下文) which the lie is told. 34.According to the passage, a white lie seems to be a lie _. A. that other people believe B. that other people dont believe C. told in order not to hurt someones feelings D. told in order to take advantage of someone 35.Research suggests that women _. This is because some people owns qualities, which others do not. The first thing you must remember is that in order to succeed, you must be optimistic(乐观的). If you don't expect to win, you will not try as hard as those who do expect to win. You also need to have a clear aim and a reason for doing something because motivation (动力) is a key to achieving success. If you don't have an aim, then you'll not be motivated to work and put your performance under the microscope to make sure that every detail is right. Another quality that helps people succeed is creativity (创造力)thinking about things in a different way and wondering how other people would do the same thing. Think about some successful people you know. They might be successful with a little creativity, but the most successful people are the most creative ones. Reading is another to success, as it will help you learn about how other people have achieved success. If you want to learn how to set up a successful
