Background of the Survey and its significance 1.1The importance of leaning English As we all know, English is the most wildly used language and is a door to the world. With the development of the economic globalization, especially after china getting into the WTO, English can help our country to keep in step with the tide of the times. Today, the international communication is becoming more and more frequent. Therefore, by English, we can know more and better about the diverse culture from foreign countries to widen our sight; we can learn the advanced technology and managerial technique to perfect our own economic system. Whats more, English can help our country to communicate and cooperate with other countries to boost our enterprises international competitiveness. As one of the four civilized ancient countries of the world, China holds 5,000-year splendid civilization and history. And nowadays, according to survey, more and more western people are interested in our Chinese culture. So, learning English well can help our people to communicate with foreign people who are Chinese culture lovers and can help to make our traditional Chinese culture known in the world. 1.2The situation of nowadays college English learning In China, as the second language, it is one of the obligatory courses each student has been learning form primary school to college. Our government attaches great importance to the study of English in that its importance. As a matter of fact, the advantage of learning English is far more than what has been mentioned. Lenin said,“Language is the most important of human intercourse.” Our human use it for the expression of thought and feelings. English, the most widely used communicating tool, should be learned well by each Chinese student. So the aim of our survey is to know more about college students English learning situation and to help us find the problem so that the school, teachers and students can work together and does it better in the future. 2. Prepparations 2.1 The plan of the survey Investigators: Respondents: Survey method: Questionnaire Survey time: The time to deal with Statistics and complete time: The detailed survey plan as the follows: we plan to give out 200 copies of the questionnaire, everybody is responsible for investigate several students. The survey is done through questionnaires and interviews. We must make sure that the questionnaire is answered seriously and ensure the validity of the questionnaires. 2.2The matters needing attention: A. While doing the investigation, each one should be patient and friendly and make sure the quality of each questionnaire. B. After we retrieve the questionnaire, the invalid questionnaires shall not be included in the statistical results, so that the results are scientific and objective. 2.3document preparations and the funding The document we need in this survey is the questionnaire designed for college students. The questionnaire is expected to be printed for 200 copies, which will cost about 40 Yuan. 3. The analytic results of the questionnaire data 3.1. The basic situation of respondents From the statistics we collected from the questionnaires, only half of the students like learning English. Some students are interested in English and almost the same number students said they were bored of English, and many students told us they learned English because they were required to do it. Students enthusiasm of learning English is not as strong as it was when in high school .After entering university, with nobody to forced them to study, some even give up learning English. In addition, the fixed pattern of English language teaching led many students lost interest in learning English, and even started to hate learning English. In university English class, most teachers give lectures just according to the textbook, without expanding, which makes a lot of students think that they cant learn many things in class. 3.2. College students purpose of learning English In the survey, 67%students said that the basic drive to learn English is the exam, for example, the CET. Only 15% said that the basic driving force of learning English is personal interest. And 18% said that they learn English for other reasons. These statistics suggest that the reason why college students learn English is that they are under the pressure of passing the CET. And this kind of students lack of persistence, they only have the CET as the motivation to learn English. What if they pass the exam? Will they still learn English? Absolutely not. On the contrary, the students who are interested in learning English have deeper level of motivation, thus they learn it initiatively and they can do it better. Overall, the purpose of learning English should no longer merely be to pass the CET and get a diploma. Students should consider more about the importance of English for their own development, for finding a good job. 4. Advice for college students on how to learn English The language is not only the language itself; it is also part of the national culture, which is the charm of the language. The language is a reflection of thinking. So to learn English is also to learn Westerners ways of thinking. In short: Try to think in English. How can we learn English well? 4.1. Pay attention to the purpose of learning English Different learning objectives will inevitably lead to different learning outcomes. In general, students with long-term purpose is generally working harder and lasting for a longer time. Students of a recent purpose may work hard during a certain time with a certain power, but once the pressure from the surroundings disappear, their learning is difficult to sustain. 4.2. Be confident while learning English Confidence is a guarantee of success. We should always remind ourselves that “I can do it“. And when we are in trouble, we should encourage ourselves in time and get out of it as soon as possible. 4.3. Develop a good study habit and grasp the right method Good study habits and learning methods is an essential quality of a student. Only with these two things, the students are possible to success in learning. Aristotle once said: Excellence is a habit. This tells us a truth: habits can change ones life. From the point of examination, the difference between habits also means the difference between scores, means whether we can enter our favorite schools 4.4. Correct the attitude towards study, to strengthen the motivation of learning English. 4.5. Stimulate students interest in learning English. 5. Re-thinking of English learning When we did the survey, many students told us their attitudes toward the college English class, which can be summed up mainly in the following aspects: 1. about college English teaching (1) The training target did not meet the social demand for qualified person. English teaching has always put develop reading ability in the first place, listening, speaking, writing, translating are only on the second level. It is not conducive to the cultivation of our ability of communicative language. (2) About the teachers. Most English classes are give in Large Classes, teaching hundreds of people in one class is impossible to have the good effect; Many teachers need to be improved in pronunciation, grammar, culture, and teaching methods 2. about the style of study Impetuous psychological community makes college students style of study impetuous and impatient. They often fell at lost and lonely. They started to sleep in class, or even cheat in exam. We students ought to try our best to set a good style of study.
