Light Up Science A journey with science and language,Bob Kibble Editor-in-Chief,Who is Bob Kibble?,1953,2013,Dalian, 2015,This presentation,Opportunities and challenges Stimulating talking and thinking in science.,Learning a language through science,Why am I excited about Light Up Science?,Active learning: students are engaged in drawing, talking, thinking and experimenting.,Science is not given to students the students create their own science.,is hands-on and brains on. Inquiry (finding out) is at the heart of science learning.,What happens when we heat water? Lets find out.,At what temperature does water boil? Lets find out,Which cup keeps out tea warmest. A paper cup or a plastic cup? Lets find out.,builds understanding through learners' voices and shared ideas.,I wonder what will happen?,Lets test this one.,develops responsibility and citizenship through science. We want students to care about each other, living things and their place in the world.,.includes creative challenges and skill development in technology.,Assessment and review opportunities are built in to every unit.,uses songs, chants and rhymes to ignite students interest in science.,student books and a teacher package: a teacher book with CD-ROM (includes student book pages, answers and audio files),A challenge for teachers,When children in China are learning and thinking about science in what language do they think?,For Bob insert children picture here thought bubbles,我想知道这个物体在水中是浮还是沉?,I wonder does this float or does this sink?,Learning science concepts, ideas, thinking,- a marriage of two different pedagogies.,We must speak only English.,We must speak only English.,Prof. Wolfgang Butzkamm,?,The mother tongue is the learners best friend and therefore should be used systematically.,A foreign language friendly atmosphere is best achieved through selective use of the mother tongue.,Learners need to associate the old with the new. To exclude the mother tongue would be to deprive students of the richest source of building cross-linguistic networks.,How can we be sure that the science that students learn in English is also available as useful knowledge in the mother tongue?,We need help.,Learn some science,Learn some science,Learn some science,How should students learn science within Light up Science?,Use English and Chinese,Use English and Chinese,Learn key English words and phrases. Learn science concepts in Chinese and English,Use English and Chinese,Using English and Chinese A sandwich approach,What did you find out from your experiment? 你从试验中发现了什么? What did you find out from your experiment,What measurements shall we make? 我们应该测量什么呢? What measurements shall we make?,This is our measurement,So, this ends the first part of my presentation. Light up Science is a course in Science with English Teachers should encourage talking and thinking and finding out. Encourage the mother tongue to be used where it is helpful.,Now lets move to part 2.,Looking at learners, looking at learning. How to stimulate talking and thinking in science.,Part 2.,Using a puppet to stimulate learning.,Using a concept cartoon to stimulate discussion,Using sensory stimulus to encourage talking, thinking and learning.,This is an ice ball. It was made from an ice balloon. Fill a balloon with water. Tie it and put it in the freezer for two days.,A sensory stimulus, a concept cartoon, a puppet. We can see how these three strategies can help learners to think, share and talk about ideas in science. Learners work in groups, they speak freely and the teacher can listen and assess in an informal way. I hope you try some ideas like these in your teaching.,Well Jasmine. I think we can say thank you and goodbye.,Bob, that was the last slide. Well have to go soon.,
