In the 1951 edition of this standard the ultimate objective was stated as being to standardize the precise diameters of ends, but this was not at that time considered to be practical until the demand for tins could be restricted to a limited number of nominal diameters. The demand is now restricted, and in this edition centre block sizes for each nominal diameter are specified. In addition, all dimensions are now quoted in metric units. It is emphasised that this British Standard is not intended to apply to “open top” cans for thermally processed foodstuffs. A British Standard does not purport to include all the necessary provisions of a contract. Users of British Standards are responsible for their correct application. Compliance with a British Standard does not of itself confer immunity from legal obligations. Summary of pages This document comprises a front cover, an inside front cover, pages i and ii, pages 1 to 4, an inside back cover and a back cover. This standard has been updated (see copyright date) and may have had amendments incorporated. This will be indicated in the amendment table on the inside front cover. It does not apply to cans for thermally processed food stuffs. NOTEThe title of the British Standard referred to in this standard is given on the inside back cover. 2 Definitions For the purposes of this British Standard, the following definitions apply: 2.1 built-up tin a tin with the body made up of at least two (but often more) components, the side wall being formed by shaping and joining the edges 2.2 centre block diameter the diameter of that part of the press tool which determines the countersink diameter of the tin end NOTEThe term “centre block diameter” is used throughout this standard, but the term “punch plug diameter” is also used in the industry. These two terms are synonymous. 2.3 nominal diameter the countersink diameter rounded up to the nearest whole millimetre 3 Range of nominal diameters and centre block diameters The range of nominal diameters and centre block diameters shall be as shown in Table 1. The nominal diameter shall be measured as shown in Figure 1, avoiding the side seam position. NOTEThe nominal diameter is the diameter D measured as shown in Figure 1, rounded up to the nearest whole millimetre. These tins correspond with drums of similar capacity specified as Class 7 in BS 814. Definition of diameter between BS 814 and this standard differs. Traditionally, drum manufacturers specify the internal diameter of the body of a drum while tin box manufacturers specify the centre block diameter of the end component of a tin. The 25 litre Class 7 drum specified in BS 814 has an internal body diameter of 279.4 ± 1 mm, while the corresponding tin diameter is that of the centre block specified as having a diameter of 277.50 mm. a Internationally agreed sizes All diameters up to and including 203 mm not greater than4 mm 219 mm and 232 mm diameter not greater than5 mm 241 mm and 255 mm diameter not greater than6 mm 278 mm diameternot greater than 13 mm Licensed Copy: sheffieldun sheffieldun, na, Fri Nov 24 07:56:54 GMT+00:00 2006, Uncontrolled Copy, (c) BSI BS 1764:1973 © BSI 11-19993 Figure 2 Measurement of end countersink Licensed Copy: sheffieldun sheffieldun, na, Fri Nov 24 07:56:54 GMT+00:00 2006, Uncontrolled Copy, (c) BSI 4 blank Licensed Copy: sheffieldun sheffieldun, na, Fri Nov 24 07:56:54 GMT+00:00 2006, Uncontrolled Copy, (c) BSI BS 1764:1973 © BSI 11-1999 Publication referred to This standard makes reference to the following British Standard: BS 814, Mild steel and tinplate drums (light duty fixed ends).
