    I GENERAL MOTORS ENGINEERING STANDARDS I Materials and Processes - Bulk Materials 1 SEALER-BODY, PLASTISOL, ELPO WET ON WET 9985453 1 SCOPE. A heat curing pumpable vinyl plastisol for sealing sheet metal joints on trucks. 1.1 General. A smooth pumpable, non-shrinking vinyl chloride resin base sealing compound which can be applied to Elpo prime coated joints, then wet on wet coated with primer surfacer and or truck acrylic enamel, with the sealer and paint curing simultaneously as the body passes through low temperature (120-1 50 C) baking ovens. 2 REFERENCED SPECIFICATIONS. GM90 1 1 P GM902 1P GM9010P ASTM D612 3 REQUIREMENTS. 3.1 Color: Optional 3.2 Texture: Smooth homogeneous mixture 3.3 Application: Suitable for brush or flow gun application. 3.4 Odor: Nontoxic, noxious and free of objectionable odor after cure. 3.5 Stability: Fill a 250 ml sargent container with compound and seal lid with tape. Condition the sample in an air circulating oven for 72 h at 45 C. After standing for 24 h at room temperature the material must be able to pass all applicable requirements of this specification. The shelf life of the material must be 90 days at temperatures not exceeding 35 C. 3.6 Solids content, GM9010P: 99.0% min 3.7 Viscosity, GM9021P, Method A, 415 kPa, and 40g sample: 10 to 45 s 3.8 Pressure stability: Compound must be capable of with- standing pumping pressure without adversely affecting viscos- ity or result in oil separation or caking. 3.9 Flow: Prepare panels of ELPO prime coated 0.80 x 100 x 300mm cold rolled steel. Extrude beads 1.5 to 3.0mm thick x 6.5 to 9.5 mm wide x 75 mm long of compound and place panels in a vertical position for 4 h at room temperature with the bead horizontal immediately after application. Bead shall not sag or flow more than 1.5 mm from original boundary. 3.10 Tensile strength (NOTE l), ASTM D612, min: 1860 kPa 3.11 Elongation (NOTE l), ASTM D612, min: 120% NOTE 1: Pull samples at a rate of 305 mm/min. 4 ADHESION COLD SHOCK AND HEAT AGING. Prepare 250 by 250 mm panels as in 3.9, upon application of sealer beads bake panels as follows: Elpo primer panel baked 30 min at 120 C. Test per GM901 1P; two 4.0 N.m impacts at -30 C, with no cracking or loss of adhesion. Heat age panels 336 h at 70C and repeat test. 4.1 Adhesion Cold Bend. Prepare 100 x 300 mm panels as in 4. Cool panels to room temperature before conditioning for 4 h at -20 C. While at -20 C bend each panel 90 over a 12.7 mm diameter mandrel, the bend being made to occur midway over the length of the beads, with beads on the outside of the bend. There shall be no cracking or separation of the beads from panel. 4.2 Paint Adhesion. Prepare 100 by 300 mm panel as follows: ELPO prime, apply beads of sealer as in 3.9, apply current truck acrylic enamel and bake 30 min at 120 C. The sealer must not cause bleeding, staining, discoloration, dulling or loss of adhesion of the overlaying paint film. 4.3 High Temperature Corrosion Resistance. No corrosion permitted when tested as follows: Apply beads as in Section 3.9 to a 100 by 300 mm bare steel panel, bake 30 min at 190 C. Subject panels to 7 days at 38 C and 100% R.H., and evaluate panel beneath the bead. Also section bead for evidence of porosity. 5 QUALITY ASSURANCE TESTS. The following test must be performed on each batch or lot of sealer prior to shipment: 5.1 Stability per 3.5 above. 5.2 Viscosity per 3.7 above. 5.3 Flow per 3.9 above. 6 IDENTIFICATION. The following information shall appear on each container: GM part number; manufacturers identification, part number, and batch number; date of manufacture; and quantity and mass of material. 7 INITIAL SOURCE APPROVAL. No shipment shall be made by any supplier until representative initial production samples have been approved by engineering as meeting the requirements of this specification. 7.1 Completed copies of the GM Material Safety Data Sheet and Critical Material Register (available from the engineering department or laboratory) must be submitted with any new submissions or where a composition change has occurred. 8 INSPECTION AND REJECTION. All shipments of material or parts under contract or purchase order manufac- tured to this specification shall be equivalent in every respect to the initial samples approved by engineering.
