Scope The object of this test method is t o determine the resistance of elastomers t o ageing, by the measurement of properties of the elastomer before and after accelerated ageing. Whilst the use of an accelerated ageing test allows rrertain conclusions to be made, it should be noted that it w i l l not necessarily agree with the results of natural ageing. Ir- order t o estimate the resistance t o ageing of elastomers, om.or more of the following properties shall be determined before and after the ageing test, anci compared. Hardness t o GME 60 252 o r a 60 256 (preferred), Tensile strength, and/or elongation at break , to GME 60 257. Such other properties as may be speciÂied on the relevant engineering drawing or material specification. The resistance to'ozone and iit ageing are not included in this test method. Definition The ageing resistance of an elastomer is defined as the change in a speci- fied property, at +23OC 2 5 K, following ageing at a specified temperature in air a t atmospheric pressure for a specified period, compared t o the original value of that property. Number and Size of Test Pieces The number and size of test pieces shall be as specified in the relevant test methods f o r the property concerned. For determination of hardness t o GME 60 252, clause 4 or GME 60 256 (preferred) clause 3. For determination of tensile strength, and elongation at break, to GME 60 257, clause 3. GME 60 252 GME 60 256 GME 60 257 Zweck und Anwenduilq Die Prüfung dient dazu, durch verscharte Bedingungen die durch Alterung der Elastomere in der Praxis hervorgerufenen Eigenschaftsanderungen be- schleunigt herbeizuïuhren. Der Vergleich der vor und nach der künstlichen Alterung gemessenen Eigenschaftswerte gestattet eine Abschatzung der Al- terungsbestänàigkeit. Die durch künstliche Alterung verursachten Eigen- schaftsänderungen lassen zwar RÜchchlÜsse auf das Verhalten von Elastomeren i m Einsatz zu, sie können jedoch m i t den Eigenschaftsänderungen, die durch natbliche Alterung hervorgerufen werden, nicht in direkte Beziehung gesetzt werden. Zur Beurteilung der Alterungsbeständigkeit werden entsprechend den Forderun- glichen : gen folgende Eigenschaften vor und nach der 4 ! F f werden können. F ' r obevorbehandlunq Bei Erstbermerungen und in Schiedsfällen ist die Prüfung nicht früher als 7 Tage, fÜr die laufende QualitätsÜberwachung nicht früher als 72 h nach der Vulkanisation durchzuführen. Vor der Prüfung müssen die Probekörper min 8 h irn unbeanspruchten Zustand bei +23OC - + 5 K gelagert werden. Determination of tensile strength and/or elongation at break to GME 60 257. Determination of any other defined properties as specified. The initial values of any required properties shall be determined within 14 days of the commencement of the ageing period. Provision shall be made for suspending the test iJieces, so thit they are a t least 10 uxn from each other, and 50 rmn from the oven surfaces. They should be stationary, not exposed t o light, exposed t o air on all sides, and free from strain. The oven chamber shall be of a size such that the total volume of the test pieces does not exceM 10 $ of the air space of the oven. The ageing of different types of elastomers having volatile ingredients i n the same oven shall be avoided . Following the accelerated ageing period, the test pieces shall be removed fro8 the oven and 6onditioned for a t least f3 h in a strainfree state at +S3 C t 5 K before the relevant properties are redetermined. c The relevant properties shall be determined as specified in clauses 7.1.1 t o 7 . 1 . 3 . Calculation of Results Change of hardness The hardness values w i l l be compared before and after the ageing, and the change of hardness reported in sñBe:degx?ees or IRHD. - - - - - - - - - - Change of tensile strength and/or elongation at break. The difference between the values of the relevant property before and after ageing w i l l be determined, and reported as a ratio based on the original value, expressed as a percentage.
