BRITISH STANDARD CONFIRMED DECEMBER 1986 BS 5350-B2: 1976 Methods of test for Adhesives Part B2: Determination of solids content UDC 665.93:620.1 + 665.93:543.714 + 543.814 Licensed Copy: sheffieldun sheffieldun, na, Mon Dec 04 15:58:00 GMT+00:00 2006, Uncontrolled Copy, (c) BSI BS 5350-B2:1976 © BSI 10-1999 ISBN 0 580 09093 0 Foreword For the purpose of quality and process control it is essential to be able to determine the solids content of an adhesive; the final thickness of the adhesive film is largely dependent upon this. A British Standard does not purport to include all the necessary provisions of a contract. Users of British Standards are responsible for their correct application. Compliance with a British Standard does not of itself confer immunity from legal obligations. Summary of pages This document comprises a front cover, an inside front cover, pages i and ii, page 1 and a back cover. It is applicable to dispersion, emulsion and solvent-based adhesives where there is a considerable loss of mass on evaporation. 2 Reference This Part makes reference to the following standards publication: BS 2648, Performance requirements for electrically-heated laboratory drying ovens. 3 Definition For the purposes of this Part, the following definition applies. solids content of an adhesive the residue remaining after evaporation of the volatile components. It is often referred to as non-volatile (n.v.) matter 4 Principle The solvent or dispersion medium is evaporated to leave a residue of non-volatile matter. The drying conditions should be such that loss of slow-drying compounds, e.g. plasticizers, that form part of the non-volatile adhesive film, is minimized. 5 Apparatus 5.1 Oven, complying with the requirements of BS 2648. 5.2 Dishes, of metal or other suitable material, with lids, about 100 mm in diameter. 6 Procedure 6.1 General. Stir the adhesive thoroughly and weigh accurately a test portion of 1 g to 2 g of adhesive into a previously dried and tared drying dish. For adhesives with solvents, replace the lid and weigh the dish and contents. Remove the lid and place the dish in the oven and leave for 1.5 h to 2 h. Remove, cool in a desiccator and weigh. Replace in the oven for 0.5 h, then cool and reweigh. Repeat until consecutive weighings do not differ by more than 5 mg. NOTE 1The oven temperature should be selected according to the composition of the adhesive. For water-based adhesives a temperature of 100 °C to 105 °C is necessary. Prolonged heating, especially of natural rubber films, should be avoided. NOTE 2In instances where charring of the adhesive occurs at high temperature it may be necessary to evaporate the volatiles of the adhesive by drying under reduced pressure, for example in a vacuum oven. NOTE 3If this method is specified for thermosetting resins where condensation reactions may occur under the conditions of the test, it is permissible to specify a definite heating time. 6.2 Number of tests. The number of tests that should be carried out depends on the precision required, but reliance should not be placed on fewer than two determinations. 7 Calculation The solids content, expressed as a percentage by mass, is given by the formula: where m0 is the mass of the test portion (g); m1 is the mass of residue (g). 8 Expression of results Express the results of the test as a percentage by mass. 9 Test report The test report shall state the following: a) a designation of the adhesive, giving all information required for complete identification of the sample; b) the temperature used for the test and the total heating time; c) the results of the test, i.e. each individual result and the mean; d) a reference to this Part, i.e. BS 5350-B2. m1 m0 - -100× Licensed Copy: sheffieldun sheffieldun, na, Mon Dec 04 15:58:00 GMT+00:00 2006, Uncontrolled Copy, (c) BSI BS 5350-B2: 1976 BSI 389 Chiswick High Road London W4 4AL BSI British Standards Institution BSI is the independent national body responsible for preparing British Standards.
