For ease of use the number BS 63 is being retained. BS 63-1:19511) is withdrawn. The two Parts are: Part 1: Specification for single-sized aggregate for general purposes; Part 2: Specification for single-sized aggregate for surface dressing. Particle size distribution is presented as a continuous grading with specified limits on percentages of material passing selected sieve sizes in order to unify the specification of aggregates with other British Standards, e.g. BS 594 and BS 4987. Requirements for aggregate soundness and the determination of the clay content of fine aggregates are not included in this revision because suitable test methods are not available, though the sedimentation test described in BS 812-1 may offer some guidance in terms of particle size distribution. Reference should be made to BS 812-101 for general guidance on testing aggregates, precision of test methods and variance arising from sampling errors. For lightly trafficked roads some authorities may consider aggregates in accordance with BS 63-1 to be adequate for use as surface dressing; production of surface dressing aggregates will usually involve washing of the aggregate after screening. A British Standard does not purport to include all the necessary provisions of a contract. Users of British Standards are responsible for their correct application. Compliance with a British Standard does not of itself confer immunity from legal obligations. Summary of pages This document comprises a front cover, an inside front cover, pages i and ii, pages 1 and 2, an inside back cover and a back cover. This standard has been updated (see copyright date) and may have had amendments incorporated. This will be indicated in the amendment table on the inside front cover. 1) BS 63 Single-sized roadstone and chippings BS 63-1:1951 Imperial units BS 63-2:1971 Metric units 2) BS 1984:1967 Gravel aggregates for surface treatment (including surface dressings) on roads. Licensed Copy: London South Bank University, London South Bank University, Thu Dec 07 02:36:28 GMT+00:00 2006, Uncontrolled Copy, (c) BSI BS 63-2:1987 © BSI 12-19981 1 Scope This Part of BS 63 specifies grading, flakiness index and strength for nominally single-sized aggregates, i.e. aggregates containing a major proportion of single-sized particles, for use in surface dressing. NOTEThe titles of the publications referred to in this standard are listed on the inside back page. 2 Definitions For the purposes of this Part of BS 63 the following definitions apply. 2.1 specified size the single size which forms the major proportion of the single-sized aggregate NOTESee clause 3. 2.2 nominal size the name given to a particular size of aggregate NOTE 1Usually this is the smallest size of test sieve in accordance with BS 410 through which at least 85 % of the aggregate passes, but where the appropriate test sieve size is not a whole number the nominal size is given as the whole number nearest to that size of test sieve. NOTE 2See Table 1. 3 Specified size 3.1 The specified sizes for given nominal sizes shall be as given in Table 1. Table 1 Specified sizes for given nominal sizes 3.2 The percentage aggregate of specified size shall be not less than that given in Table 2 b) and Table 3 b). Table 2 Grading limits, specified size and maximum flakiness index for surface dressing aggregates 4 Sampling and testing 4.1 Sampling shall be carried out in accordance with the methods specified in BS 812-102. NOTEIt is recommended that sampling be carried out as soon as possible after delivery because of the risk of contamination to aggregates when stockpiled. 4.2 The grading of the aggregate shall be determined in accordance with BS 812-103 using the washing and sieving method. 4.3 The flakiness index of the nominal size aggregate shall be determined in accordance with BS 812-105.1. 4.4 The 10 % fines value of the aggregate shall be determined in accordance with BS 812-3.
