Straight Threads: Unified Standard Class 2A external threads and Class 2B internal threads with minor diameters modified to Class 3B limits for brass fittinas. shall awlv to plain finish (unplated) fittings. For externally thrëädëd parts with additive finish, the maximum diameters of Class 2A may be exceeded by the amount of the allowance; that is, the basic diameters (Class ZA maximum diameters plus the allow- ance) shall apply after plating. The pitch diameter tolerance shall be the same as corres- ponding diameter-pitch combination and class of the Unified coarse and fine thread series or for special diameter-pitch combinations shall be based on dianeter, pitch and a length of engagement of nine times the pitch. See Unified Screw Threads in Section X. For straight thread eccentricity tolerances applicable to tube fittings see Page L-100.102. Where external threads are produced by roll threading and the body is not undercut, the diameter of the unthreaded portion of the body adjacent to the shoulder may be reduced to the minimum pitch diameter. External threads shall be chamfered to the diameter of abut- ting surfaces or to diameters specified to produce a length of chamfered or partial thread ecuivalent to .?5 to 1.25 times the pitch of the thread, rounded to a three-place decimal. Internal threads shall be countersunk 90“ included angle in accordance with the tabulated dimensions. Pipe Threads: Pipe threads, unless there is specific auth- orization to the contrary, shall conforn with the Dryseal American Standard Taper Pipe Thread (NPTF). See Dryseal Pipe Threads in Section X. The length of full form external pipe thread shall not be shorter than L2 plus one pitch (thread). Where external pipe threads are produced by roll threading, the diameter of the unthreaded portion of the body adjacent to the shoulder may be reduced to the E2 pitch diameter. Due to design limitations the tap drill depth for internal pipe threads specified in the tables is less than the stan- dard Dryseal practice. The depth specified necessitates the use of bottouing taps to roduce full form thread lengths conforming with the (NPTFP standard. Although it is the consensus of manufacturers and users that trouble free assembly and pressure-tight joints can best be assured by the use of full length (NPPF) pipe threads, some installations may justify the use of Dryseal SAE Short Taper Pipe Threads. Special fittings utilizing Dryseal PTF-SAE short pipe threads; having external thread shoulder lengths, internal thread tap drill depths, and overall or end to center lengths reduced in accordance with the reduction in thread length; shall be available under separate part number as requested by the purchaser. The length of full form ex- ternal thread shall not be shorter than the L2 length. Material and Manufacture: A s designated by part number, tittings shall be brass or steel conforming to the speci- fications below: Brass fittings, unless otherwise specified, shall be mach- ined from extruded bar shapes conforming to SAE CA360 (half- hard) copper alloy, or from forged blanks conforming to SAE CA377 copper alloy. Steel fittings, unless otherwise specified, shall be made from low carbon steel of good quality having free machining characteristics. Finishes: As designated by part number, fittings shall be furnished plain, plated or coated in accordance with the OM specifications l i s t e d herein. (Basic features of these specifications are described herein for reference purposes and f u l l details for each are published in the GM Engineer- ing Materials and Processes Standards.) Plain steel: Unless otherwise specified by user, plain (uncoated) steel fittings shall be furnished with a light o i l film. Zinc Dichromate on steel: GM 4342-M, Code 20D24, zinc plating and subsequent chromate treatment. It iequires a plating thickness of .O002 inch minimum and 24 hours salt spray without white corrosion. Cadmium or zinc plating on brass: GM 4252-M, Code O, speci- fication shall apply. It requires a flash deposit of cadmium or zinc for coloring or protection in transit and storage. Cadmium and zinc plating on steel: As indicated by part number; cadmium or zinc optional, GM 4252-M; cadmium only, GM 4341-M; or zinc only, GM 4342-M; Code 20, specification shall apply. Each requires a plating thickness of .O002 inch minimum and 32 hours salt spray. Phosphate coating on steel: As designated by part number, GM 4435-M, Code A, specification requiring phosphate coat- ing plus a subsequent o i l type treatment and 72 hours salt spray; or GM 4276-M specification requiring pnosphate coat- ing plus subsequent treatment w i t h a compound other than paint and 24 hours salt spray; shall apply. Chronium plating on brass: GM 4251-M, Code 20, specifica- tion spa11 apply. It requires nickel and chromium total thickness of .O002 ifich minimum and chromium thickness of .O0001 inch minimum. Nickel plating on brass: S M 4254-X, Code 20, specification shall apply. it requires nickel thichess of .O002 inch minimum. Copper plating on steel: GM 4250-M, Code O, specification shall apply. It requires a flash deposit of copper for identification or colori%. Worhanshio: Fittings shall conform t o best commercial quality consistent with good worlonanship. They shall be free from hanging burrs, slivers, seams, loose scale and a l l other defects that might affect their serviceability. Assembly Considerations: Where it is not objectionable from a functional or production standpoint, use of a compatible lubricant or sealant may be desirable in assembling Dryseal pipe thread components to minimize galling and effect a pressure tight seal.
