Scope This Japanese Industrial Standard specifies measuring methods for the surface hardness of nitrided layer (hereafter referred to as the “surface hardness“) of iron and steel by means of nitriding, nitrocarburizing, etc. (hereaf- ter referred to as the “processing“). Remarks 1. The specification on processing, etc. shall be as given in JIS B 6915. 2. The standards cited in this Standard shall be the following: JIS B 6915 JIS G 0201 Nitriding of steel Glossary of terms used in iron and steel (Heat treatment) Method of Vickers hardness test Method of Rockwell and Rockwell superficial hardness test Method of Shore hardness test Method of Knoop hardness test JIS Z 2244 JIS Z 2245 JIS 2 2246 JIS Z 2251 2. Definitions the following, and for the rest of the terms, definitions given in JIS G 0201 shall be applied. The principal terms used in this Standard are as defined in (4) (5) Vickers surface hardness iron and steel which is determined by Vickers hardness test. The hardness of surface of nitrided layer for Knoop surface hardness and steel which is determined by Knoop hardness test. The hardness of surface of nitrided layer for iron Rockwell superficial surface hardness, scale 15 N The hardness of surface of nitrided layer for iron and steel which is determined by Rockwell superfi- cial hardness test of scale 15 N. Shore surface hardness and steel which is determined by Shore hardness test. compound layer depth nitride, carbide, carbo-nitride, etc. from the surface. diffusion layer depth diffusion of nitrogen, carbon, or the like, but excluding the compound layer. nitrided case depth The distance from the surface of nitrided layer to the point where the difference between the physical or chemical behavior of the nitrided layer and that of matrix is infeasible to identify. Test specimen For the test specimen, the product itself shall be used. If this is infeasible, iron and steel of the same quality of the said product which is treated under the same conditions thereof may be used. 4. Measuring method of surface hardness 4.1 for the test specimen approximately 0.01 mm or more in nitrided case depth. Measuring method of Vickers surface hardness This method is applicable Vickers hardness test specified in JIS 2 2244 shall be applied to the test surface, whereby the hardness shall be determined, In this case, the test load shall be 0.9807 N or less. 4.2 This method is applicable for the test specimen approximately 0.01 mm or more in nitrided case depth. Knoop hardness test specified in JIS Z 2251 shall be applied to the test surface, whereby the hardness shall be determined. In this case, the test load shall be 0.9807 N or less. Measuring method of Knoop surface hardness 4.3 Measuring method of Rockwell superficial surface hardness, scale 15 N This method is applicable for the test specimen approximately 0.2 mm or more in nitrided case depth. Rockwell superficial surface-hardness test of scale 15 N specified in JIS 2 2245 shall be applied to the test surface, whereby the hardness shall be determined. 4.4 This method is applicable for the test specimen approximately 0.3 mm or more in nitrided case depth. Shore hardness test specified in JIS 2 2246 shall be applied to the test surface, whereby the hardness shall be determined. Measuring method of Shore surface hardness Remarks: Measurement on surface hardness shall be made on the as-processed surface of test specimen. According to the purpose of processing, however, hardness test is applied to a test speci- men being removed to its compound layer. In this case, the hardness test is conducted after removing the equivalent layer depth to the compound layer by polishing. With this respect, sufficient care shall be taken during polishing so that this does not affect the surface hardness of the test sur- face. Description The description shall be as given in the following: The numerical value of surface hardness should, as a rule, be down to the first integer place. However, those for Rockwell superficial hardness of scale 15 N and for Shore hardness may be described down to the first decimal place.
