The consensus principle extends to the initiation of work under the procedure of the Association, to the method of work t o be followed, and to the final approval of the standard. An American Standard is intended as a guide to aid the manufacturer, the con- sumer, and the general public. The existence of an American Standard does not in any respect preclude any party who has approved of the standard from manufacturing, selling, or using products, processes, or procedures not conforming to the standard. An American Standard defines a product, process, or procedure with reference to one or more of the following: nomenclature, composition, construction, dimensions, tolerances, safety, operating characteristics, performance, quality, rating, certification, testing, and the service for which designed. American Standards are subject to periodic review. They are reafirmed or revised to meet changing economic conditions and technological progress. Late in 1958, at the request of a representative of the General Electric Company, a special task group was appointed by the chairman of Sectional Committee C78, on Electric Lamps. This task group considered the problems that were inherent in the existing systems of glow-lamp identification that were administered by each lamp manufacturer for his own product. Not only were there two different designation systems in use, but, since each manufacturer assigned his own designations, there was no assurance that the same designation used by two different manufacturers actually referred to lamps which were interchangeable. The task group agreed that a completely new glow-lamp designation system should be developed rather than trying to adapt one of the two systems then in use. This new system was to be administered by ASA so as to assure users that lamps bearing the same designation would be interchangeable. During the series of task-group meetings, which were held approximately every three months for a period of two and a half years, a new glow-lamp designation system was developed, as described in this standard, and new designations were assigned to glow lamps for indicator use. It was anticipated that glow lamps for circuit-component use would also be assigned new designations. Concurrent with the development of a designation system for glow lamps, the task group also prepared a specification for methods of measurement and definition of terms. This information is contained in American Standard Methods of Measurement of Glow Lamps, C78.385-1961. Suggestions for improvement gained in the use of this standard will be welcome. Scope the interchangeability of lamps which bear the same symbol. This standard describes a designation system for glow lamps. 3. Glow-Lamp Designation 2. Purpose The glow-lamp designation system shall consist of Examples: A2C, G3R, F9D, etc an initial letter, a single digit, and a final letter. The letters I, O, Q, U and the digit O shall not be used. The designation symbol shall have no signi- ficance but shall serve only as an identifying mark. NOTE: Although none of the lamp characteristics will be evident from the lamp designation, lamp specifications may be obtained by reference to the manufacturers catalog. The purpose of the glow-lamp designation system covered by this standard is to provide a nationally applicable and convenient lamp identification symbol which may be used for both manufacturing and Order- ing purposes. The designation will assure the user of Appendix (This Amendix is not a part of American Standard Method for the Designation of Glow Lamps, C78.381-1961, but is included ti facilitate its use.) Administration Al. Administrator American Standard C78.381-1961 shall be adminis- tered through the offices of the American Standards Association, Incorporated, 10 East 40th Street, New York 16, N. Y. A2. Procedure to be Followed in Assigning and Recording Glow-Lamp Designations A2. I When an electric-lamp manufacturer requires a designation for a glow lamp, he shall file with the American Standards Association a request form (see samples) , in duplicate, listing such specifications as are necessary to describe the lamp sufficiently to allow the application of a designation in accordance with the American Standard C78.381-1961. A2.2 Upon receipt of the request form, ASA shall take the following action: If a code has not been assigned to a lamp of the same specifications as listed on the request form, then ASA shall assign and record a designation A2.2.1 of the Standard for such a lamp and shall promptly inform the manu- facturer of the designation assigned. A2.2.2 If a designation has already been assigned to a lamp with specifications which are the same as those of the submitted lamp, ASA shall notify the filing manufacturer of the existing designation. In this event, it is suggested that the submitting manu- facturer use the existing designation for his product also. A2.2.3 If a lamp is on record with characteristics almost identical to the lamp submitted, but the desig- nation has not yet been released in accordance with A2.3, ASA shall circulate the specifications at once to the manufacturers participating in the lamp-designa- tion program and request their opinions as to whether the same or a new designation shall be recorded. A2.3 Upon the assignment and recording of a desig- nation, ASA shall circulate copies of the completed lamp-designation request form to the manufacturers participating in the lamp-designation program, 60 days after receipt of the request or on an earlier date selected by the manufacturer.
