Subject 33 July 1, 2005 SUMMARY OF TOPICS The following changes in requirements are being proposed: Minimum Operating Time for Standard Response Links For your convenience in review, proposed additions to existing requirements are shown underlined and proposed deletions are shown +med-e&. Minimum Operating Time for Standard Response Links RATIONALE Submitted by: Kerry Bell, Underwriters Laboratories Inc. The recently adopted requirements for standard response links include a minimum and maximum operating time for the sensitivity test. While these requirements are similar to those applied to sprinklers, links are generally used in applications that are quite different than sprinklers including the operation of doors, dampers, vents, and the like. For typical link end use applications, the minimum operating time criteria is not considered necessary or appropriate to achieve the desired level of performance during field use. Currently, some links have response characteristics that fall within the range between the maximum time specified for the QR type and the minimum operating time criteria for the standard response type. These links have been used for decades in the field with successful performance. Based upon these considerations, it is proposed that the minimum operating criteria for links, as specified in paragraph 10.1 and Table 10.1, be eliminated. Additionally, a definition of Heat Responsive Link is being proposed for the glossary to clarify the features to be included as part of a heat responsive element. PROPOSAL (NEW DEFINITION) 5.4.1 HEAT RESPONSIVE LINK - A device that includes a heat remonsive element and other features that allow for the amlication of external installation loads. Therefore, there is no balloting at this time. All comments received will be provided to the proposal author with a request that the comments be taken into consideration. The proposal author will then be asked to inform UL Standards whether they wish to amend their proposal or the accompanying rationale before the proposal is advanced to ballot. UL will not require the proposal author to respond to comments received during this preliminary review. Neither is UL required to provide a written response to those comments. Should this proposal (or a modified version of this proposal) advance to ballot, any comments received in response to the balloted proposal will be responded to in accordance with ULs STP procedures.
