Among them, the translators subjectivity plays an important role. Chinese culture is unique and has its own system, which makes great contributions to the human civilization worldwide. Involving nearly every aspect of Chinese culture, A Dream of Red Mansions is very popular all over the world. Until now, it has been translated into English and some other languages, but only two translations are complete versions. At the same time, these two English versions are most popular: One published under the title of A Dream of Red Mansions by Yang Hsien-yi and his wife Glady Yang, and the other in Britain entitled The Story of the Stone by David Hawkes and John Minford (the first 80 chapters are translated by Hawkes.)This paper will analyze the two translation versions on translators subjectivity when translating traditional Chinese cultural information and compare the two versions as well as giving an explanation on the reasons why the differences occur. Whats more, this paper will also study the influence of translators subjectivity on translators shown by their translation purpose and their translation strategies. 2. Introduction to the translators, two different translation versions of A Dream of Red Mansions and theories on translators subjectivity2.1A brief introduction to Yang Hsien-yi& Gladys Yang, David Hawkes& John Minford and their translation versionsYang Hsien-yi was a famous Chinese translator who translated many Chinese classics into English with his wife Gladys Taylor, among which A Dream of Red Mansions is one of the most famous ones. He used to study in UK and his wife Gladys Yang was from UK. The couple was keen on Chinese culture and introduced Chinese culture to western readers. They mainly translated works that they enjoyed very much and the main reason for their translating was out of their passion for Chinese literature. Yang and his wife returned to China in 1940, and began their decades long co-operation of introducing Chinese classics to the English-speaking world. Working for Foreign Languages Press in Beijing, a government-funded publisher, the husband and wife team produced a number of quality translations. The works translated include classical Chinese poetry such classic works as A Dream of Red Mansions(红楼梦), The Scholars, Mr. Decadent: Notes Taken in an Outing (老残游记) Liu Es The Travels of Lao Can, and some of Lu Xuns stories. Yang Hsien-yi truly made significant contribution to translating Chinese classics into English and spreading the Chinese culture throughout the world. A Dream of Red Mansions is a great translation work of him. Wu Shushing, the prestigious radiologist, regarded his translation version as the most accurate English translation until then. Yang Hsien-yi always thinks that Chinese people should know about the splendid foreign cultural heritage, and the westerners also should know the Chinese splendid ancient culture. He has said that he translates Chinese into English as faithful as possible.David Hawkes is the former professor of Chinese at Oxford University. He had stayed in China and is passionately fascinated with Chinese culture, literature especially classic literature. In order to translate The Story of the Stone, he resigned the professorship of Oxford UniversityHowever, he only translated the first 80 chapters in three volumes, his son-in-law John Minford, who is also a Sinologist, translated the rest chapters. David Hawkes points out that because the text abounds with passages containing references to books, plays and poems that Cao Xueqin was able to take for granted in his Chinese contemporaries and might often seem puzzling or incomprehensible to the westerners lacking the literary background, he occasionally amplifies the text a little in order to make the passage intelligible. The above description tells us that, for the same literary masterpiece, authors used their subjectivity differently and have the different strategies respectively. Therefore, the contents differ greatly. 2.2A brief introduction to the theory on Translators Subjectivity “Subjectivity” refers to “the specific discerning interpretations of any aspect of experiences. They are unique to the person experiencing them, the qualia that are only available to that persons consciousness” (Wikipedia). From the definition of “Subjectivity” we can infer that translators subjectivity is also one of subjectivity in which the translator is the main role of the translation activity as well as an important participant of the national culture. However, translators subjectivity has been overlooked all long and translators subjectivity was once at the edge of the translation activity in recent years, with the development of the “cultural turn” in translation study, translators subjectivity is gradually gaining its deserved importance. The principle of translators subjectivity first appeared in China in 1982. Translation is not just the transformation from one language to another, but also the interaction of two kinds of culture. Like a bridge, a translator holds two different cultures together. Without this bridge, different cultures would never blend and influence each other, so translator plays an extremely important role in translation activity. When translating one language into the other, it is inevitable for the translator to put in his own understanding. Therefore, it is necessary for us to consider translators subjectivity. The theory of translators subjectivity holds the view that “translation is the reproduction of the original text by adding the translators own understanding of the original text as well as
