How to Be Polite at School.doc

How to Be Polite at SchoolWhether youre an elementary, junior high, high school or college student, being polite in school is necessary etiquette for a young lady or gentleman. Being polite is easy and should become an everyday practice. Learn easy ways to be polite to teachers and other students. Instructions1 Say please and thank you. You should have learned this at home but, if not, here is a reinforcement. Always say please and thank you. Whether someone is holding the door for you, you are asking for a pencil or accepting a compliment, saying please and thank you is very polite and appropriate for school.2 Raise your hand. When answering or even asking a question and expressing your opinions in school, it is polite to raise your hand in order to be called on. When raising your hand, you should not speak until the teacher has acknowledged you.3 Speak only when it is your turn to speak. Talking out of turn is extremely rude, especially when someone else is speaking. By raising your hand, as stated above, and waiting to be called on, you ensure that it is indeed your time to speak.4 Say yes and no. Dont say "uh huh", "yeah" or hunch your shoulders. It is polite to answer questions yes and no. If you really want to be polite, when addressing your teacher in and out of school, add maam or sir to the end of yes and no.5 Realize that your teacher is an authority figure. The older students get, the more they feel as though they are equal with their teachers; however, they forget that their teachers hold the authority over their grades. Keep in mind that your teacher is an adult. Address them as Ms., Mr. or Professor at all times unless instructed otherwise. Do not speak to your teacher with any sort of slang or attitude.6 Use lunchtime etiquette at school. Chew with your mouth closed, wash your hands before and after you eat, dont play with your food, dont play with other peoples food, only use your fingers when eating finger foods and dont talk when youre eating.7 Get to class on time. Dont arrive later. Its extremely rude and shows that you dont care enough about school to be on time.8 Come to class prepared. Having all of your homework done, and all of the material that your teacher asks for prepared and ready, is polite. This also gets you extra points with your teacher.
