It describes an ordinary London stock broker Strickland, who was addicted to the art, abandoned his wife and children, abandoned his wealthy and happy life, went to went to Paris, determined to find his art. Five years later, Strickland was down and out, but he was still in his dream and never regretted it. In the pursuit of art, his talent was gradually recognized. Later he went to the south Pacific Tahiti. He composed his bright life with pen, and Injected his value of life into the canvas. Then he married a native womanand had three children. But not for long, his children died and he suffered from leprosy. The struggle of poverty and the torment of the disease didnt hit him down. He just regretted that he had never visited his consciousness. After his death, his wife followed his last wishes, destroyed his legacy., The work performance talent, personality and material civilization, and the contradiction between modern marriage and family life. It has a broad view of life, sharply dissects the human nature under the skin, mixing with onlookers laugh and cruel looking.,A short analysis of the leading character,3,Most people find his behavior quite incomprehensible, and they criticise his selfish, coldness and his deviation on morality. However, some people call him a genius with the innate mission, and average person can not understand him. In fact, when I first read this book in middle school, I was deeply touched. I did appreciate Charles Stricklands deviation.,The central character, Charles Strickland is a middle-aged English stockbroker who abandons his wife and children abruptly to pursue his desire to become an artist.,But when I read the book again in college, I feel differently. I find that Charles is not a painting genius, And he never thought he can do it so well. Painting is just a tool. And everyone has a tool to show the meaning of life, but we forget it in the tide, and we loose the freedom Sometimes we say change the world , but in the most time the world changes us.Because we do care about what we are looked like in this world. Its the most terrible thing that someday you find that you become one of them to critisice others,The reason why I recommend this novel,4,When personal values conflict with social values, this book do make sence From a long-term perspective of society, we can choose morality, but do not criticize everyones right to choose the freedom. Thanks for Maugham, he gave us a chance to think about morality and freedom.,Thanks,
